Dr. Paul Fenyves is a board-certified internal medicine physician who has worked in primary care for nearly 15 years. He loves being a primary care doctor because it gives him a bird’s eye view of all aspects of his patients’ health, enabling him to work with them to understand the various factors that contribute to their well-being.
“I work to understand my patients—what they love and what they value, and then I make recommendations that are appropriate for them based on their particular health status and also who they are as a person,” Dr. Fenyves says. “Being an internal medicine doctor is about translating the huge possibilities of modern medicine into the very specific treatments that are right for them as individuals.”
Dr. Fenyves was interested in science from an early age, and after studying physics and then computer science at Brown University, he realized he wanted to work in a field that would allow him to make a direct difference in people’s lives. That prompted him to depart from his computer programming job at Electronic Arts shortly before the dot-com bubble burst, returning to his home state of Texas to earn his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School.
Upon graduating, he moved to New York to complete his residency in internal medicine at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, where he met his wife, who was also training to become a primary care physician. After a brief stint working with his father at Methodist Family Health Center in Dallas, the couple returned to New York, where they still live with their two daughters. Before joining Atria, Dr. Fenyves spent 13 years as an internal medicine doctor at Weill Cornell Medicine’s faculty practice on the Upper East Side. There, he also served as Medical Director and Associate Director of Digital Care and Innovation for Primary Care, expanding the practice’s telehealth program just as the COVID-19 pandemic was beginning.
Throughout his career, Dr. Fenyves has enjoyed building lasting relationships with his patients. He takes a personalized approach to medicine, helping patients in a creative, compassionate way to understand new evidence or treatments that are relevant to their unique circumstances.
“Medicine should not be applied in a cookie-cutter fashion,” he says. “Medicine is an art that must be tailored to the individual patient because there’s a lot of ambiguity.” Dr. Fenyves uses this ambiguity to create care plans that are nuanced and adaptable. Knowing that patients’ needs change over time, his goal is to support them through any current health issues while also helping them improve their healthspan over the long term. “I love to accompany people on their health care journeys, helping them navigate any acute issues they encounter, and also supporting them as they chart a course to a healthier future,” he says.
As a primary care doctor, Dr. Fenyves enjoys being a connector between his patients and other specialists. At Atria, he appreciates the opportunity to seamlessly consult other doctors and work with them to address patients’ health holistically. “Being able to collaborate with the world experts on any given topic in order to help our patients is really a blessing.”
