As the daughter of a physician and a nurse, Dr. Jennifer Buczyner always knew medicine was her path, but she credits her passion for neurology to her own experiences as a patient.
When Dr. Buczyner was young, she experienced regular fainting spells, which prompted her concerned parents to get to the bottom of her symptoms. She was ultimately diagnosed with neurocardiogenic syncope by a neurologist, inspiring her to pay that forward and become a neurologist herself. When her grandfather was later diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, it underscored her commitment to studying and treating the brain.
Dr. Buczyner is now a neurologist with experience treating a vast breadth of conditions including migraines, stroke, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and other nerve and muscle disorders. “I love all aspects of neurology,” Dr. Buczyner says. “Neurology allows you to treat people of all ages—from pediatrics to geriatrics.”
Dr. Buczyner began her education by studying biology and psychology at the University of Georgia Honors Program. She then earned her medical degree at the Medical College of Georgia before completing her residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center and a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology at Emory University.
At Emory, she taught courses on general neurology and neuromuscular diseases. She recalls a formative lesson from one of her professors, who taught her that it’s the physician’s responsibility to learn something new from every patient she encounters. She carries that with her and has passed it on to her own students. “Not only do I learn something new about each patient’s life that I didn’t know before, but I also learn more about their disease state,” she says. “Teaching makes you a better physician and fuels you.”
In 2013, Dr. Buczyner and her husband moved to Florida and she joined Palm Beach Neuroscience Institute, a multi-specialty neurology practice in West Palm Beach. She started her own practice, Comprehensive Neurology of the Palm Beaches, in 2017. That same year, Dr. Buczyner became Stroke Director at Jupiter Medical Center and built a Primary Stroke Center for the hospital, educating other medical staff and community members about the signs of stroke and stroke treatment.
Dr. Buczyner also served on the board of First Choice Neurology, the largest private neurology practice in the U.S., and continues to serve on the board of Jupiter Medical Center’s Medical Executive Committee.
Dr. Buczyner is particularly excited about recent advancements in dementia prevention and about bringing leading-edge science to her patients. “We’ve always focused on the disease state, which can be difficult. But now there’s so much to offer people in the realm of prevention as well as treatment,” she says. “There’s now so much energy around how we can focus on optimizing someone’s health before they develop any of these diseases. We can change the course of someone’s life.”
Outside of work, Dr. Buczyner enjoys snorkeling, traveling to experience new foods and cultures, and spending time outdoors with her husband, two daughters, and the family’s Australian Shepherd in Palm Beach Gardens.
