Dr. Alex Heromin
Director of Urgent & Home Care, Atria Palm Beach; Emergency Medicine
South Florida
As one of the few emergency medicine physicians in the United States to have completed a fellowship in acute-care telehealth, Dr. Alex Heromin works at the forefront of digital health and provides hospital-level care in patients’ homes.
Dr. Heromin—who is affectionately known to his patients as Dr. Alex—appreciates that this unique specialty has allowed him to combine his passions for science, people, and technology. When he was a child growing up in Florida, Dr. Heromin loved spending time in nature catching lizards, fishing, and observing animals—so much so that he considered becoming a veterinarian. But as he got older, he realized his passion for connecting with his patients and listening to their stories.
After he studied biology and chemistry at the University of Miami, Dr. Heromin earned his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Health Sciences in St. Kitts. He then specialized in emergency medicine because he saw it as a dynamic field that would allow him to fulfill his desire to nurture people while constantly learning on the job. Dr. Heromin completed his internship and residency at Michigan State University, and as Chief Resident, he spent time providing front-line medical treatment to patients in a wide variety of emergent situations.
“They’re just living their normal lives, and all of a sudden, something changes instantly,” Dr. Heromin says. “It’s such a privilege to be injected into people’s lives when they’re in such vulnerable states. I really love the human aspect of being able to help provide emotional support while also ensuring that we give great medical care.”
Dr. Heromin soon realized he wanted to explore ways to offer this kind of care outside of emergency room settings. So in the fall of 2019, he pursued a fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia focused on creating “hospital at home” setups and providing acute care via telehealth. Training at Thomas Jefferson, which has the only such program in the U.S. accredited by the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, gave Dr. Heromin the expertise needed to provide exceptional care outside of a hospital setting when the pandemic hit the following spring. He was in a unique position, he says, to lead his institution in experimenting with remote patient monitoring and caring for people who could not easily meet their doctors in person.
This experience showed Dr. Heromin the ways technology can extend care to patients, whether because they have physical limitations, aren’t able to drive, live in remote locations, or are traveling far from their medical team. When he transitioned to Assistant Medical Director of At-Home Care for the concierge emergency medicine practice Sollis Health in Palm Beach and Miami, he was able to further use these skills to help his clients when they needed it most.
Dr. Heromin has used remote patient care to do everything from measuring a patient’s temperature and blood pressure to providing IV antibiotics to conducting EKGs and chest X-rays in people’s homes. When he gives people the tools to collect their own health data, Dr. Heromin says, it increases patient engagement with their treatment and helps physicians adjust their care to reduce risk and prevent unnecessary hospital stays.
One of his favorite aspects of this kind of care is the opportunity to build relationships with his patients and their families over time. “I really get to know people, their children, and the subtleties of their situations, which ensures I can give them a high-quality health care experience in an intimate setting,” Dr. Heromin says. At Atria, the interdisciplinary nature of the work takes this even further. “It’s nice to have a collaborative team where everyone’s in sync,” he says. “We’ll know everything about a patient, and I can discuss the treatment with a patient’s Chief Medical Officer or cardiologist or gynecologist—anyone involved in their care.”
Outside of work, Dr. Heromin stays true to his Florida roots by spending time on the beach, going fishing, and enjoying all kinds of outdoor activities. He is also passionate about wildlife conservation and collects first-edition books as a hobby.
