Jessica Boyle is a physical therapist, certified athletic trainer, and certified run coach with deep expertise in orthopedic and sports rehabilitation. Driven by a passion for both preventive and restorative care, she helps people of all ages and fitness levels build strength and recover from injury, crafting practical plans to ensure they can maintain an active life on their own terms.
Boyle grew up dancing and playing soccer, and her path to physical therapy began with injuries of her own. In seventh grade, an ankle sprain sidelined her from dance and sent her to a physical therapist, where she found something that stayed with her. “I really enjoyed interacting with my PT every day and seeing how they helped people get back to the things they love to do,” she says. A second ankle injury during high school soccer introduced her to athletic training, and she was equally captivated by the hands-on, in-the-moment nature of that work. She decided to pursue both.
Boyle earned a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from the University of Delaware, a program she credits with giving her an exceptionally strong clinical foundation. From her first day as a freshman, she was in the training room, working with every kind of athlete, be it in football, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, track and field, baseball, and more. After graduating, she went on to earn her Doctor of Physical Therapy from Columbia University.
Throughout her training and early career, Boyle pursued every opportunity to expand her range so she could learn to treat all kinds of people. She completed a clinical rotation at River Spring Health–Hebrew Home for the Aged in the Bronx, where she learned to be creative and resourceful, designing PT programs and exercises that could help people with limited mobility and no access to formal equipment. She also spent a summer with the Cincinnati Reds at their training facilities in Arizona, gaining exposure to professional-level sports rehabilitation across major and minor league players.
After completing her doctorate, Boyle joined Ivy Rehab Physical Therapy in New York, where she treated people with a wide array of acute and chronic conditions, including hip and knee replacements, hamstring strains, elbow injuries, frozen shoulders, lower back pain, and more. She then moved to New York-Presbyterian Westchester, where she appreciated working with colleagues across the hospital to support both inpatient and outpatient cases. Caring for people across various kinds of illness—from stroke and traumatic brain injury patients in the ER to post-surgical orthopedic cases in the outpatient clinic—deepened her understanding of the full continuum of care.
“I learned about so many different PT specialties, and now I know exactly what questions to ask a patient to discern their situation and who to turn to if we need more expertise,” Boyle says.
Most recently, she served as a physical therapist and athletic trainer at Columbia Orthopedics—Sports Therapy, where she treated pre-surgical patients, post-surgical patients, and athletes recovering from both acute and overuse injuries. Boyle incorporated the latest technology into her exams and cared for injuries across a wide range of ages and athletic goals.
At Atria, Boyle combines many of her interests, bringing together her cooperative spirit, interdisciplinary approach, and her love of personalized care and prevention. “This collaborative nature is what medicine should be,” she says. “I really love interacting with other departments and learning from them to help get patients on the right path.”
Boyle knows that people arrive at physical therapy with all different levels of knowledge and comfort about moving their bodies. She listens carefully to each person’s goals, lifestyle, and constraints before building a plan, and focuses on translating progress into achievable, concrete changes patients can actually feel.
This doesn’t always mean people need to overhaul their lives, Boyle says. She believes fitness should be fun, so she looks for minor adjustments to move people toward each milestone. She is particularly interested in the intersection of orthopedic care, sports medicine, and active-lifestyle maintenance.
“We all want to maintain strong functionality throughout our lives,” she says. “It’s incredible to see the changes people make. That’s what keeps me inspired.”
Boyle lives in Manhattan with her husband, and enjoys spending time with her large extended family. Outside of work, she enjoys running marathons, is an avid baker, and an enthusiastic foodie.
