Internal Medicine
Dr. Nicole Tyer is a double board-certified internal medicine physician and obesity medicine specialist who has dedicated her career to comprehensive, personalized, preventive health care. With extensive expertise in metabolic health and a passion for patient education, she brings both clinical excellence and genuine empathy to every patient interaction.
Dr. Tyer’s approach is holistic and thorough. She loves learning about her patients “head to toe” so she can create a full picture of each person’s health. “I want to get to know everything about you, everything about your lifestyle, what you’re doing, what you’re not doing, what you want to do, how you feel, so I can really understand how best to help you,” Dr. Tyer says.
This method reflects her personal philosophy: every body is unique, every person is looking for something different, and the key to great health care is truly listening to what each individual needs to thrive.
At Atria, Dr. Tyer is thrilled to combine her comprehensive approach with cutting-edge technology and collaborative care. “So much of our health is in our own control, and we can take steps that are preventive,” she says. “At Atria, we have this opportunity to investigate everything, from imaging to blood tests to seeing all specialists within the same organization. We really understand what’s happening with patients’ bodies, and we can work together at the cutting edge of medicine to make patients even healthier.”
Dr. Tyer works with each person to address all aspects of their health, including how hormones and metabolic health affect other parts of the body. She has seen how an increasing understanding of the complex factors affecting weight—from genetics and hormones to environmental exposures—have revolutionized treatment approaches.
“We now understand so much more about why people have a hard time losing weight, and now we have amazing medications that can direct different parts of the hormonal pathway,” she explains. “It’s so rewarding as a doctor to finally be able to make people feel better and also improve their health.”
Her expertise extends beyond medications to comprehensive lifestyle interventions. Growing up in southern California, Dr. Tyer was immersed in health and wellness from an early age. Her family worked in the dairy business and prioritized healthy, fresh foods throughout her childhood. She brought those habits into her adulthood, having completed triathlons and marathons herself. Dr. Tyer understands the importance of sustainable, enjoyable approaches to fitness and nutrition. She encourages patients to embrace the active southern California lifestyle while providing evidence-based guidance tailored to their individual needs.
Dr. Tyer received her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from University of California Los Angeles and earned her medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine, conducting research on metabolism during both college and medical school. She then completed her internship and residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and served as Chief Resident before pursuing additional training in endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism at UCLA Medical Center.
After her training, Dr. Tyer spent six years in New York at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Weill Cornell Medical College, where she provided general primary care and complex medical care to people with cancer while teaching and mentoring medical students and residents. She was then recruited to become Assistant Program Director for Yale School of Medicine’s Internal Medicine Residency Program at Greenwich Hospital, where she developed innovative curricula and led wellness initiatives for residents. In 2019, she moved back to California to join Cedars-Sinai Medical Group and then opened her own practice in 2022.
Dr. Tyer’s commitment to education continues through her role as a medical reviewer for Illuminate Health, a company that offers reviews of consumer health products, where she evaluates popular health products and supplements to help separate evidence-based treatments from those that are not safe or effective. This work keeps her at the forefront of emerging health trends and allows her to guide patients through the overwhelming array of health information available on the internet.
“Patients today are educated. They want to have a conversation with their doctor about things that they’ve read about or are worried about, so I’m fortunate to be in a position where I can have that conversation with them,” Dr. Tyer says.
Dr. Tyer lives with her husband and two children in Los Angeles, where she maintains the active lifestyle she promotes for her patients. She enjoys hiking, yoga, swimming, and spending time outdoors year-round.
