Gastroenterology
Dr. Leo Treyzon is a board-certified gastroenterologist with advanced training in nutrition and special clinical expertise in functional bowel, stomach, and esophageal disorders. With more than 18 years of experience, Dr. Treyzon has spent his career helping patients navigate conditions with many symptoms but no single obvious cause, providing personalized, empathetic care that matches people’s circumstances and improves their well-being.
Dr. Treyzon grew up around medicine — his father was a doctor — and his love of science developed early. After earning his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, he received his medical degree from the University of California, San Diego and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. A mentor during his residency inspired Dr. Treyzon to pursue a fellowship in gastroenterology, which he completed at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA)’s David Geffen School of Medicine. During this time, he also earned a Master of Science in clinical research focused on nutrition at UCLA.
“I thought I was going to be a researcher, but it turned out I was more interested in directly solving problems and adding value on a personal level, so I went into private practice and it was just a wonderful fit,” says Dr. Treyzon. “As a gastroenterologist, people talk to you about the most important things going on in their life, their family, their work, and how it affects their digestive system. It’s so fulfilling that people trust you with all that, and then you can deliver on that trust and help them get better.”
When he first entered private practice, he worked primarily as a nutrition specialist. But as he heard about patients’ experiences with other doctors, he was surprised how rarely nutrition came up in those conversations. “I thought it was wild that in so many of these important diseases people were experiencing on a day-to-day basis, doctors really weren’t talking about nutrition,” he says. Dr. Treyzon was drawn back to gastroenterology to help correct this, and over time, his practice became a merger of the two: gastroenterology grounded in nutritional health.
Now, when he works with new patients, Dr. Treyzon’s approach centers on two key questions: what problem are they trying to solve, and why now? He prioritizes listening deeply and lets patients lead these initial discussions because, he says, each person knows their own body best. Dr. Treyzon likes to be creative and flexible when figuring out the best way to work with patients, whether that means including someone’s family in the discussion, meeting them in a location where they’re comfortable, or using more (or less) technology to fit each person’s needs.
Dr. Treyzon often asks patients: “If you were the doctor with infinite knowledge of everything in medicine and you had every tool available to you, what do you think we should do to solve your problem?” He finds these discussions often spark ideas and help patients feel comfortable sharing information that inform their treatment.
Dr. Treyzon knows trust is foundational to any doctor-patient relationship, and he sees this as something built cumulatively, through communication, follow-up, and removing any barriers that stand between a patient and good care. He is meticulous about ensuring that every part of a patient’s experience makes them feel calm and supported.
Throughout his career, Dr. Treyzon spent years as an assistant professor at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine, teaching medical students, residents, and fellows training in gastroenterology, and more than a decade supervising trainees in the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Fellows Endoscopy Clinic. “I loved being able to pass my knowledge on to the next generation,” he says. Dr. Treyzon also previously served two successive terms as Clinical Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology at Cedars-Sinai, an honor he was nominated for by his peers in the department.
At Atria, Dr. Treyzon brings the same collaborative philosophy to a fully integrated care model. “The team approach is so useful to physicians and for patients,” he says. Bringing imaging, pharmacy, and other specialists all under one roof means he can quickly consult with other experts and take proactive steps to keep each patient healthy. “We’re all invested in that patient’s care and all want the best outcome,” he says.
Outside of work, Dr. Treyzon stays in near-constant motion — hiking, running, swimming, and traveling. He is also an avid reader and unwinds with an audiobook on his daily walks around Los Angeles.
